New Fruit - The 2008 Program Schedule
by Todd Smiedendorf
Todd came to MLA through the Art of Leadership Training Program and has been committed to MLA ever since, staffing Leadership Training and Spirit Camps, apprenticing to be an MLA senior facilitator, and working for the emergence of a Christian language Art of Leadership Training. Originally from Michigan, Todd has now called Colorado home for 17 years. Ordained in the United Church of Christ, Todd currently serves as Campus Minister of PRISM, a progressive student community at CU Boulder.

I hope I never forget the wonder of seeing the first emergence of a seedling from the soil, that wondrous realization that a buried and invisible seed has actually undergone a transformation of growth. MLA is like that growing wonder, except that we are way past the seedling stage. Our expanded 2008 Program Schedule shows that our alliance is more like a young fruit tree beginning to bear its fruit.

The founding vision of MLA was to enlarge its existing circle of leadership, support, and participation for men seeking an authentic manhood, a more soulful way that would help the world become more just, joyful, and sustainable. That envisioned fruit of more to offer and give to the world is emerging. It’s my joy and privilege as Chair of the Program Committee of the Guide Council to say, that in 2008, MLA will support more programs with more men in leadership, apprenticing for leadership, and participating than ever. MLA is again supporting powerful programs with which many are familiar like The Art of Leadership Training, Vision Fast, Father and Son Retreats, Winter and Summer Spirit Camps, and the Boys Wilderness Camp.

And more fruit is emerging. Nashville MLA men, inspired by their Sapphire Canyon experience last year, will host their first ever Nashville Spirit Camp in April and the Bayou Boys men’s group of Lafayette, Louisiana is already committed to being there. I have organized a new Oregon Spirit Camp to be offered in October with the help of Sapphire alum and Oregonian Mike Johnson. I’m anxious to return to the majestic woods of northwestern Oregon near Portland and excited to connect with men I knew in my time there and men I haven’t met yet.

And there are more program “seeds” that are germinating. More information will be coming about programs for men in transition and for alums of the Art of Leadership Training. A new youth rights of passage and initiation program is being created, and I am working with other excited MLA alums on a dogma and doctrine free Christian identified men’s program to bring the MLA spirit to men who might not connect with other MLA programs, but who could connect to a “Christian languaged” MLA training.

I invite you to view our schedule page to book your soul time in 2008 with one of MLA’s impactful programs, and to invite another man to do the same. Our world and our people are in need of men opening to soul and spirit, men freed for joy and service.
