Who is ‘Us’?
Who are ‘They’?
Who am I?
Join us in this challenging and fun conversation
What does it mean to offer true space?
Can I allow myself to feel safe and brave outside my echo chamber?
Can others feel welcome and vulnerable in my presence…
…even when they don’t agree with me?
Does the expression of my ideals respect diversity and promote inclusion?
Our ability to reach unity in diversity will be the beauty and the test of our civilization.
Diversity & Inclusion is a discussion based free circle where participants from a variety of perspectives can offer diverse topics into a guided conversation.
For those willing to take the risk, we offer the liberating and healing gift of owning our own shadows: those parts of ourselves we don’t like, repress, and judge in others. We invite you to trust those shadows as amazing resources.
Strength lies in differences, not in similarities.
~ Stephen R. Covey
In this Free Circle you will experience council driven conversations led by trained MLA Guides.
You will arrive, learn the container guidelines, ground in the shared intentions of community and mutual support, meet others in the group and check-in at whatever level you feel comfortable. The guide will gather the names of participants who wish to engage the challenge, and begin the lottery. Chosen participants will have the opportunity to voice a diverse perspective about something they claim to intensely support or oppose.
This can get serious.
Diversity is being invited to the party; inclusion is being asked to dance.
~ Verna Myers
The challenge occurs when that same participant also faces the request that they voice the opposing viewpoint with equal zeal.
This can go all kinds of ways, from hilarious – to beautiful – to tearful.
Diversity is the mix. Inclusion is making the mix work.
But how do you meet the challenge? What’s the point?
Well, just engaging with this process is a courageous act.
Confusing the group about which perspective you believe is a plus,
And there is the final question to the group: “Did I experience diversity in a way that expands my inclusivity today?”
There will be time and an invitation in each circle for the group to reflect.
All participants are welcome to engage in the group reflections.
What divides us pales in comparison to what unites us.
You can experience this circle as a participant or an observer. Because this circle offers the opportunity to engage privately or interactively, you can attend as an individual, or with friends and family. Each person is responsible for choosing their own level of engagement with self and other, which acts as the first level of self care and development. The model views both our inner and outer life as a source of learning and discovery.
This circle includes a registration requirement, a confidentiality commitment, and your physical presence (in-person or via video picture). It is not recorded. A quiet, comfortable private space with some room to move; markers, pen and paper (or journal) and ritual elements are recommended but not required.
