Short on time? Here are the 60-second basics…
WHAT: Racism, Masks, and Manhood is a five-part experiential online course that invites men into awareness of and discussion on how to address internalized and systemic racism by owning the masks of whiteness.
The latest expressions of racism and white privilege revealed by both racially-biased policing and the inequities in pandemic health care have again brought to light how deeply embedded systemic racism is in our culture.
As we approach the one year anniversary of the murder of George Floyd, and the Black Lives Matter protests, we invite you remember your feelings and to take stock of your past year and what you might have done personally to address racism (or haven’t yet).
Are you a man who is ready and willing to be an active part in the multi-generational racial healing process? Is this the time for you to commit to real change related to racial justice and much needed transformation? Are you willing to take this opportunity to explore how racism and whiteness live in you both personally and socio-economically?
If so, we invite you to join with other men in examining our whiteness and being willing to recognize that we must start with the only man you can change…. yourself.

Perhaps the most powerful of all white privileges is that we white identified men can choose to deal with racism and the pain that division causes or not. If we don’t want to confront racism consciously we can deny, avoid, and dismiss the issue in so many ways.
What will you choose to do with that privilege? If this is the right time for you to engage in radical soul healing for yourself and our communities, please join us.
The course will be divided into two parts:
Part 1
The first part will include three sessions to find your own motivation for doing this work. We will look at the origins of whiteness and begin the process of sourcing our whiteness in our beliefs, thinking, and feeling. We will explore the masks we men wear and the shadows we project onto others. We will take a hard look at the creation of those masks of white manhood historically, psychologically, socially, and physically and why that inner work is so critical in addressing racism.
We will discern our personal biases, how, when and where these were learned, and explore both the many levels of white privilege and also its cost to our souls.
Questions we may explore as we look at how racism shows up in our inner life might include:
- What is the history of whiteness? And why does it matter?
- What is our racial identity? How does that impact our biases and projections?
- What are our personal masks of whiteness?
- When and how do we maintain our white privilege within?
- What are the wounds of white privilege to our souls?
- Are we willing to feel the depth of our anger and grief at racial injustice?
- If so, how can we work with those feelings in a supportive and productive way?
We will do our best to approach this inner transformational work with the utmost compassion and creativity for ourselves and other class members.
Part 2
In the final two sessions of our class we will open to depth of our feelings around racial injustice and find ways to work with those feelings in supportive and productive ways. We will source both the risks and motivation to sustain anti-racism within our hearts, minds, and souls and find the support we need to continue this soul work for the rest of our lives.
Systemic racism impacts all levels of society including health care, education, religion, media and entertainment, travel and social mobility, agriculture, science and tech, the military, the police and legal system, jobs and virtually everything in the world of business and the economy.
Questions we want to explore with you are:
- Knowing that each of us would have to do a lot to change those dynamics, what are the risks of looking at our racism and the privileges and benefits whiteness provides?
- How can we use our white privilege financially, socially, and politically to balance the books?
- How would that look for each of us personally?
- Where do you find the motivation and inspiration to take action?
- How would a commitment to antiracism for the rest of your life look?
- Knowing this soul work is a very long road, what support would you need to keep deepening your antiracism work and stay on track?
We hope you choose to join in our container of collective education and exploration around racism and white privilege with compassion and courage. We feel the world needs each of us to openly look at this shadow. Our bottom line desire in offering this program is to catalyze a healing, inclusive movement of our souls for our families, our communities, and the world.
Through embodied experiential practices, soulful conversations, deep questioning and listening, powerful written resource materials, along with your inner wisdom, you will be part of the healing transformation that our world so needs.
